I adore my bike! My husband got it for me for my birthday two years ago (there's actually still photos from that up on my ooooold blog -geeze did I really leave that thing up??) and I really love it. Unfortunately, it's seen better days. The handle bars are a bit grimey, one of the tires blew out, and rust is slowly taking over the chrome. So we decided it definitely needs a bit of a make-over to bring the life back to it.
We already have a plan for restoring the chrome to get rid of all that nasty rust so it doesn't completely destroy the bike and also so it looks all nice and shiney again, and the tires are a simple and cheap replacement, no problem! Even cleaning the handle bars is simple.
My dilemma is with the paint. Sure, there are a few places that it's chipped off and a little worn down. Do I absolutely have to repaint it? No. It could be fine left the way it is. But when I originally thought about restoring the bike I did like the idea of changing the color and doing something fun partly, well, just for fun, and partly because I never understood why the seat of the bike is red and the rest of the bike is purple. I also already have reproduction decals so that all of the pretty lettering wouldn't be missed if I do decide to repaint. I did a quick mock-up in photoshop for my original idea...
My idea was doing white with black polka dots for the body, and painting the gear cover to match the same red color of the seat (it would have white lettering) and we plan to get white-wall tires too.
Here's the thing. Frank pointed out that this would be going completely away from how it was originally, and pretty much all Schwinn lovers would hate me for it. Which is totally true. I'll admit that most of the time I hate when people completely change something vintage or antique myself. He also said he hates chrome and white up against each other, but I have to say I kind of like it in this idea, so whatever!
SO. It's your turn!
I really am looking for any and all oppinions and ideas for what to do with the bike paint.
Should I paint it? Do you hate or love the polka dots? or should I just leave it the way it is?
I really would appreciate any opinions!
